The term Pandemic was hardly used last year in the roots music community of Los Angeles, California.
This time, last year ,the third season of The Roadhouse Series was underway in Altadena, a small community north of Pasadena, at the intimate listening room, The Coffee House Backstage.
We were preparing for an evening of patriotic and protest songs, from the best singers and songwriters to match.
This year, The Roadhouse Series is doing the same ,only now a worldwide virus has forced our community of musicians, the world over,to go into a strange sort of underground, presenting shows from our homes and apartments.
This time, we will present not only songs of America, but songs of the world in response to our new sense of unity as we share in this crisis.
The Roadhouse Series began in 2017, with the goal of bringing together the best musicians and singer- songwriters, in an intimate space to pay tribute to the history of American Roots Music. We have delivered shows honoring Hank Williams, Buddy Holly, Motown, Stax, Outlaw Country and the Women of Americana Music.
The series has developed a loyal following over the last four years.
My background in songwriting and as a writer for "No Depression" (online) has helped to guide the series and set the historic context for the shows with stories and background.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have begun doing the series through live stream, with a platform used by Divine Rebel Productions, which consists of musician/ songwriting team Dolly Ramirez and JJ Schoch.
Our first two shows were tributes to the late great John Prine who passed away April 7th, due to complications from COVID-19.
Our next show on July 30th is titled "Songs of Independence, Freedom & Unity."
Our artists will perform patriotic songs as well as stories and ballads from nations all over the world. There will be topical and protest songs and ballads of justice and heroism.
Included on the bill will be some of the finest artists in the international roots music community including Freebo, Chad Watson, Pam Loe, Feef Mooney, CoolHouse, and many more.
More details to come! (photo: Terry Paul Roland with Richie Furay)
