Set Your Heart on Fire

I haven't written here in yonks, but today seems like the day.

Here at Little Friendly Music, we are launching my first self-produced single, Pyro's Heart.

COVID TIME has been a weirdly creative time, and I think I can't damn Facebook the way I used to. I've made friends there, who make music too, and stream concerts and make phone videos. And connect.

Terry Paul Roland got me into The Roadhouse Community online and I met Paul Zollo, Fernando Perdomo, Dolly Ramirez, Pat Nason, JJ Schoch. The list goes on. Superbly talented people who are also warm and supportive, funny and giving. The kind of people you used to run into in the record store. People you can talk music with for hours.

My decision to make an album came when I realized I needed to make songs that were just fun. Just hooky. Just sounds people wanted to have. Companions. Nothing ponderous.

The world is too heavy for us now, anyway.

So I listened to a lot of great music. Pat Nason.Ted Russell Kamp. Emily Zuzik Holmes. Ruby Friedman. I got blown away by Fernando Perdomo.

I realised there is a hell of a lot of great music out there. Why shouldn't I join in?

My friends helped me to make my first video. If times were different, we would have had a party and filmed it. People flinging paper hearts at each other like tiny frisbees. But we couldn't , So I did something else, and asked twenty friends of mine to send me absurd photos. Photos of Valentines, Happy Faces, and Fire.

I guess that here in California we shouldn't use words like "Pyro." We live in Fire Country. Using this word is an attempt to take it back. Back to passion. Back to the spirit of how we live. If we can get stirred up enough to do a dumb dance, snap our fingers, pound our fists on a tabletop, well, that's setting a fire. Staying warm. Making hot joy.

I want to release this album, Cartoon Vagabond, kind of slowly. Here is the start. I think this is the lightest song on the album. But why not begin with light and love as we are almost hitting Valentine's Day?

I hope you enjoy the song and the video.

And I hope we can stay warm, kindling some kind of hope and fire for the future.

After all, we're in it together.
