Sweet and Cool During Covid Times

We have been quarantining now for seven weeks. And in the process, we here have been traveling back in time, mostly to Scotland, to remember our very first recordings as musicians. We weren't signed. It was all we dreamed of. We played the pubs in Edinburgh and Glasgow six nights a week, and would come home reeking of lager and smokes, sweating out the chippies we ate at 2am, when we left to go home, loading gear up three flights of tenement steps, falling into bed, tired and wired, sleeping in until at least 10am, when a cup of coffee was more than welcome. Sometimes we played as a trio, most times a duo, Frankie and myself. All of our friends were people we met at gigs. We were paid poorly, but never thought much about money or things. It was a simpler lifestyle, driven by dreams.

Once a week, I would go to Sound Cafe, just outside Edinburgh, to record with Dave Gray. His private studio was small and cozy. We started slow, but soon escalated into creating album projects. There is no room to talk about how we got to Dave's, the deal with Zomba, Jon Turner, Palladium Studio, the first band, its collapse. These stories deserve so much more space.

We released this record in Glasgow, had a party, and friends who had picked their favorite tracks to create the album came. I remember getting my hair done.

I remember this was also the day that our Peugeot, our lovely big gigging car we'd taken on tour to The Netherlands and beyond.. was stolen.

It did seem to us that every time we had something to celebrate, something more was taken away from us. We were always ok. James Duffy, our brother-in-law, lent us his car so we could get about to gig. It truly wouldn't be long before we would leave Scotland for Los Angeles.

There was little time to worry. We had to get ready. We had to create. We had to do what we could with what we had. We pulled so many favors. And we really never felt alone. When we left, we had no idea what we were moving into.

In this way, NOW is similar. People say " Unprecedented times." And it's true.

For me, this has been a time to go back in time. To release my discography, to connect with people I thought I had lost. To find out the love is still there. I just have to be grateful for the connections. They are very sweet, and very cool. And, of course, more to come. And more to be revealed.
